So, if you didn't know, this summer has been tough. With working on the book, and general slurry of financial and life issues that come up every week, and being a foster dad to some pretty rambunctious kids, I really didn't get a lot of time for drawing. After one of our kiddos moved on to a new home, and then 2nd Star Festival, I suddenly found myself in pre-Fall with new jobs, old work to finish, and no creative juice. This is a weird place for me, since I rely on my creativity in every aspect of my life. So what to do! A friend mentioned an illustration project that we had discussed almost a year ago that I was really excited to do, and when it came up again I felt a little guilty that I wanted to put everything else away and do it. It's not a paying gig, nor does it tie in with any of the book projects that we are doing. It was just pure, creative, fan boy fun. I dived into it, making sure to let clients and backers know that I had taken a few days off, and I just drew my heart out. Here are the results!
All this is to say, sometimes you have to do what excites you, and what charges you up! I feel energized now, and ready to jump back into my primary projects again. Thanks Chris for the idea, and thank you Brian Jacques for the awesomeness that is Redwall. |
